The Red Dunes in Dubai sit in the desert southeast of the city, around Lahbab and the Al Badayer stretch off the Dubai–Hatta Road. Most visitors get there in roughly an hour from Dubai Marina, Downtown or Deira, depending on traffic. They are the rust-orange dunes behind most desert photos, and they are where the majority of Dubai dune buggy tours run.
We run our buggy camp at Al Badayer and Desert Safari Camp at Lahbab Desert, so this guide comes from daily time on these dunes rather than a brochure. It covers exactly where the Red Dunes are, why the sand is red, the best season, how to get there, what to do once you arrive and what it costs.
What Are the Red Dunes in Dubai?
The Red Dunes in Dubai are a vast stretch of towering, rust-colored sand dunes located primarily in the Al Lahbab Desert and surrounding desert regions like Al Badayer Desert. There is no single signposted "Red Dunes" landmark. Locals and tour operators use the name for a few connected areas, and knowing which is which helps you book the right experience.
| Area | Where it is | Known for |
| Lahbab desert | South-east of Dubai, inland from the city | Deep red, rolling dunes close to the emirate |
| Big Red | Al Badayer side, along the Dubai–Hatta Road (E44) | The tallest, steepest dune face in the area |
| Al Badayer desert | Hatta Road corridor, on the Sharjah side of the border | Wide, quieter dunes and open desert camps |
Which one is our camp?
Our ESA Dune Buggy Dubai camp is in Al Badayer, reached via the Hatta Road. That puts you on the Big Red side of the dunes, with fewer crowds than the tourist strips closer to the city. Because Al Badayer sits across the emirate line, you will also see it described as the dune buggy Sharjah area. It is the same desert and the same red sand.
Red Dunes vs the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve
Don't confuse the Red Dunes with the protected Al Marmoom reserve. The reserve is a conservation area with strict access rules, and its dunes are paler. If you want the classic red-orange look and dune bashing, you want the Lahbab and Al Badayer belt.
Why Are the Red Dunes Red?
The colour comes from iron oxide. Sand grains in this part of the desert carry a thin coating of iron-bearing minerals such as hematite. Over long stretches of time, exposure to air and heat oxidises that iron, the same chemistry that rusts metal. Older, more weathered dunes tend to be deeper red, while younger or recently shifted sand looks paler and more golden.
Light changes the effect too. At sunrise and sunset, low-angle light pushes the dunes toward burnt orange and crimson, which is why these two windows are the best for photography.
Exact location of the Red Dunes Dubai
The Red Dunes are about 60 to 80 km south-east of central Dubai, at roughly 24.95°N, 55.72°E.
That places them in the Al Badayer and Lahbab desert belt, along the Dubai–Hatta Road (E44) corridor.
To reach the dunes, head east out of the city and join the Dubai–Hatta Road (E44).
Our camp's exact pin is sent with every booking confirmation, and you can also open the Al Badayer dunes on Google Maps.
| Starting point | Approx. distance by road | Typical drive time |
| Dubai Marina / JBR | 75–80 km | 60–80 min |
| Downtown Dubai / Business Bay | 60–70 km | 50–65 min |
| Deira / Dubai International Airport | 55–65 km | 45–60 min |
Distances and times are approximate and depend on traffic and your exact starting point. Allow extra time at peak hours.
Best Time to Visit the Red Dunes In Dubai
The best time to visit the Red Dunes in Dubai is October to April, when daytime temperatures are comfortable for open-air riding. With the cooler season just starting, this is the right moment to plan a trip.
- October to April: the peak season. Mild days and cool evenings suit buggies, quads and full safaris.
- Sunrise: quiet dunes, soft light and firmer sand. Our morning dune buggy tour is built for this slot.
- Late afternoon to sunset: the most popular window, with the strongest colour and the best photos.
- May to September: very hot at midday. Book early morning or evening and carry extra water.
- Weekends and public holidays: busier, so book a few days ahead.
- Night rides run too, but the colour is what the Red Dunes are known for, so most first-time visitors choose a daylight slot.
How to Get to the Red Dunes From Dubai?
The drive is about an hour from central Dubai, longer in rush hour. You have two practical options.
Option 1: Hotel pickup and drop-off
This is the easiest route if you don't have a car or a 4x4. Pickup is available from most Dubai areas, including Marina, Downtown, JBR, Deira, and Bur Dubai. The pickup fee is AED 350 and covers up to five passengers in one vehicle, so it works out cheaply for a family or a group.
Option 2: Drive yourself to the camp
Access to our Al Badayer camp is free. We share the GPS location once your booking is confirmed. The road to the camp is paved, so a normal car or SUV is fine, and a 4WD is not needed to reach us. Free parking is available for cars, SUVs and minibuses.
Do not take a standard car onto soft sand on your own. Dune terrain needs the right vehicle, tyre pressure and experience, and recovery in summer heat is a real risk. Leave the sand to the buggy and your guide.
For first-timers, we suggest booking a slot in advance through our contact page or on WhatsApp, so the pickup time and camp location are locked in before you set off.
What to Do at the Red Dunes In Dubai?
The Red Dunes are built for off-road activity. These are the experiences we run most often.
Dune buggy rides
A self-drive dune buggy is the signature Red Dunes activity. You drive a Polaris RZR or Can-Am Maverick in a convoy behind a guide, over marked routes with steep faces and open flats.
Choose a 2-seater or 4-seater, and from 30 minutes up to 2 hours. You don't need a driving licence, and no experience is required because the guide briefs you before you set off.
Our most-booked options are the Polaris buggy ride for couples, the Polaris family buggy ride, the Can-Am Maverick X3 and the Polaris RZR XP Pro. Browse the full buggy rental Dubai range if you are comparing.
Quad bike and ATV rides
Quad biking suits riders who want something simpler than a buggy, or a ride for teenagers. Options include the Yamaha quad bike, the Kymco quad bike and the more powerful Raptor 700cc. See the whole quad bike Dubai line-up.
Desert safari with a buggy
If you want more than the ride, combine it with an evening safari. Our standard safari with dune buggy and premium safari with dune buggy add dune bashing, sunset views, a BBQ buffet and entertainment. See all desert safari Dubai packages.
Sandboarding and photography
Sandboarding is included on our buggy tours, and our guides stop for photos on the best dune crests. Camel rides are advertised as free with our tours, so confirm the current offer when you book.
